It’s a small but gorgeous lake with a .6 mile trail that wraps around it. You should probably buy the permit as the amount of people that show up after 6pm is ridiculous. The line of cars to get into the park, along with the amount of cars that quickly fill up the parking lot outside the lake is crazy. This picture I took was the only good photo without a lot of people that I took. I would probably also suggest going during the less tourist filled seasons. The surrounding Rocky Mountain National Park is far more beautiful and less crowded than the lake

Beautiful! You can go for a 1.5 km walk around the lake or start from here for a longer walk on one of the trails. Parking is not big so can take some time before spot is free. Also take on account you need to bring your own food and drinks as no restaurant or shop in the park.

Bear Lake is one of the most beautiful places we visited in the Rocky Mountain National Park. We've visited here once a few years ago in the early winter when the lake was frozen but there was minimal snow on the ground. We loved it so much we returned again during the heart of winter, when the lake was not only iced over but there were deep banks of snow. The hiking trails around the lake were well-maintained and provided great views, but we could only get partway around during our second visit due to the heavy snow.

Beautiful scenery. The trail around the lake provides stunning views of the lake and mountains. Hiking around Bear Lake is a great way to start your day at RMNP.

We did this hike on an afternoon in mid-March. The hike was a short trail to the lake and then a loop around. During our hike the lake was mostly frozen, and probably unsafe to walk on as it was thawing. The loop trail was most packed snow and fine with traction devices. We saw several strollers attempt the walk. In warmer months that works, but not with snow where there were steep and narrow spots. Views of and from the lake were pretty. The hike is an easy short loop.
