This review is for the trailhead. I drove in at 4pm and there were many open spots, even on a Saturday(June 26 2026). You either have to come crazy early in the morning or later in the evening, otherwise cars are lined down the road. At the trailhead, there's a rangers station that had 1 ranger on my visit. The station also doubles as a mini visitors center/gift shop. I bought a magnet from the little building before embarking on my hike. There's vault toilets here as well, no running water to be found. There is a creek on the hike that you cross over multiple times if you have a way to filter it, it was flowing well today. I parked here for the Chasm Lake huke which was 8.15 miles round trip, and I got back before sunset even arriving late. I had the lake nearly all to myself (just 1 other guy was there).

This is a popular hike with a pretty small lot. In the summer months, summit-goers start to arrive as early as 3am. There is no overnight parking or dispersed camping permitted near the trailhead. Depending on what day of the week you go, the lot and approach road may be full by 6-6:30am. It's also part of the RMNP system so timed entry and day use fees may apply. Don't let my review of the trailhead keep you from doing the hike. Whether you bag the summit or check out Chasm Lake, it's one of the most scenic and rewarding hikes in all of Colorado! Yeehaw!

Yep - it's a trailhead. Just get here early. By 5 am or so to get a space (and not have to park out on road where it says "No Parking" - ??). And be prepared for weather- had sleet, snow, freezing rain, sun. Good day, but be prepared.

Real windy at the top, but no cars present at 3am. Granted, it was November but warm and clear! Free parking since it wasn’t peak season and trail is well kept. Also one of the only hikes that has 3 separate bathroom locations at the main destination (chasm, longs peak, and one at the junction).

My wife and I hiked to chasm lake which you must take the longs peak trailhead and trail to that destination. It is amazing! It is beautiful and I would list this trail from moderate to difficult at times. Specifically the ending scramble right before you make it to the lake. My wife and I are from Illinois in our mid-50s but in good shape. The total trip up and back was just under 6 hours. That includes a few rest stops and lunch up at the lake. It was late October. We were very lucky with the weather as it was cool but not cold. It was sunny but very windy. I'm very proud of us for making this hike. It was more than we bargained for but so happy we did it 👍
