Hogback Distillery in Estes Park is an absolute hidden gem and easily one of the highlights of our trip. We stopped in to try several of their handcrafted Scotch whiskies, and every pour was impressive — but their peated Scotch truly stole the show. It honestly gives Ardbeg a serious run for its money, with bold smoky flavor, great balance, and a smooth finish that rivals some of the big-name distilleries.
The experience was made even better by Katherine, who was a blast to chat with and treated us exceptionally well. She was knowledgeable, welcoming, and genuinely passionate about what they create here, which made the tasting even more enjoyable. The space itself is cozy, warm, and inviting — the kind of place you want to linger, sip slowly, and soak in the atmosphere.
It’s a little off the beaten path for now, so you’ll want to keep an eye out until their new signage goes up. You’ll find it right at the end of historic Main Street near the water wheel, and it’s absolutely worth seeking out.
In addition to the Scotch, they offer a great selection of mixed drinks. We tried the Scotch neat and also had an excellent espresso martini — both were top-notch.
If you’re visiting Estes Park, this is a must-stop destination. Do yourself a favor and grab a bottle to go — you won’t regret it. Hogback Distillery delivers quality, atmosphere, and genuine hospitality all in one unforgettable experience.
Katherine & Graeme took such great care of us! We are visiting from Chicago for a special occasion and cannot wait to return. We were guided through our flight experience and were treated like family. Extremely lucky to have found this gem & most definitely recommend whether you are new or experienced in bourbon spirits. We truly appreciate Katherine & Graeme’s hospitality! ☺️
During a family outing in Estes Park, the five men in our group decided to visit the Hogback Distillery tasting room. I have visited a number of craft distilleries, but this was far and away the best experience yet.
First, the bourbons and single malts we sampled were outstanding. We tried a variety of mash profiles, and they were all of excellent quality, something not always found at small, craft distilleries.
As good as the whiskey was, Catherine was better. She was personable, attentive, and above all else, extremely knowledgeable. Our small group is visiting from South Carolina, Mississippi, and Wyoming, so we don’t have the option to become regulars, but Hogback Distillery will become a regular stop when we have the opportunity to visit again.
Shout-out to the fantastic team at
Hogback Distillery — Graham, Catherine and the rest of the crew
If you’re looking for a standout whiskey experience, this place is a must-visit. Nestled in the beautiful mountain town of Estes Park, Hogback applies Scottish whisky traditions and blends them with an American craft mindset — a unique combination that makes it well worth the stop.
Here’s a quick snapshot of why it’s so special:
• Founder Graeme Wallace came from Scotland, where he spent years immersed in the whisky world before bringing that expertise to Colorado.
• Their whiskey-making is serious: from Scottish-style peated malt single malts to bourbons using Colorado spring water, they’re doing craft alcohol with intention.
• The Estes Park tasting room, bottle shop and bar are open (check current hours) — ideal for sampling and taking home something special.
We love Hogback Distillery and are so happy they have a tasting room downtown. It's a great place to stop for a cocktail, and of course, take a bottle or two home. The atmosphere is charming and always so friendly and welcoming. Graeme and his wife (I'm sorry I can't recall her name) have built something really special. They're both always willing to discuss and educate. It's almost hard to believe this quality of bourbon is coming out of Colorado.
