My family and I stayed at the Trailborn Rocky Mountains location in early October. While the property offers a convenient location close to nearby attractions, our overall experience was underwhelming and did not meet expectations.
The hotel appears to have potential but is in need of improved maintenance and stronger guest service training. One positive highlight was the male bartender, who was friendly, professional, and welcoming. Unfortunately, the rest of our interactions with staff were inconsistent. Several employees appeared disengaged or uninterested in assisting guests, and at times, some were seen standing around and chatting rather than attending to guests or maintaining the space.
The dining area was also noticeably unclean in the mornings, with tables left dirty for long periods. In addition, the complimentary breakfast advertised on the hotel’s website was not available during our stay. When we inquired, we were informed it would not be offered due to staffing shortages… disappointing given that it was listed as an included amenity.
During checkout, despite only a few guests being present in the lobby, the staff did not acknowledge us or offer a simple “How was your stay?” This lack of engagement left an uncomfortable final impression.
Our double queen room was adequate in size but showed visible signs of wear, and a few fixtures were not functioning properly.
While the location is excellent and convenient for exploring local activities, the overall experience did not reflect the image portrayed online or through influencer promotions. With better attention to cleanliness, maintenance, and guest interaction, this property has the potential to offer a much better stay.
First - I LOVE crisp, clean, modernized-yet-classic motels. This review may be biased based on that fact.
This place checked ALL of the boxes!
Location is close to the main drag, but is quiet and far enough to avoid the traffic. We saw mule deer, elk, and a bear on-site, and the lake and creek are within a very short walking distance.
Rooms were clean, the staff was so sweet, friendly, and helpful! The s'mores bar & roasting pits were the CUTEST addition, we're bummed we ran around too much in town and didn't get to fully utilize them.
We were in a dog-friendly room with two older (smallish) dogs, and having somewhere that we felt they were safe if we ran to dinner or out to get snacks was critical for the trip. They loved watching the elk that hang about in the lot and yard, and were thoroughly exhausted by our trip home.
The only downside of the place was mostly due to our upstairs neighbors and their stomping and slamming of doors starting around 2 am. Walls are apparently just thin enough that if you throw a rave in your room, that the neighbors will hear it. To ensure clarity- these people were LOUD, the motel itself was not the problem... hence the 5-star ratings across the board. Please be cognizant of your neighbors if you're going to stay out all night and cause a ruckus in your room after bar close. 😉

It’s a shame, because we really wanted to like this place. The lobby/bar is nice. The room was decent and the bed was VERY comfortable and the location truly cannot be beat. The thermostat is fickle at best. It’s concerning when the hotel has a note under it saying if you press the wrong button you will break it.
Where our main problems started was with the actual AC Unit. It’s perched right above the bed. Our unit dripped right onto the bed/pillows so we had to leave our AC off. We also had an issue with mosquitos/bugs. Our last night there, I probably killed 40-50 in our room.
I tend to be pretty forgiving on some things, especially when things aren’t necessarily anyone’s fault. We could’ve said something about the AC immediately and maybe something would have changed, same with the bugs. I spoke to management when we were checking out and they were pretty apologetic. They offered a partial refund, which honestly would’ve made up for everything, but we never received it.
I had a great time at Trailborn. Stayed 2 nights. It was fantastic and relaxing. Derick, Sarah, and Connor were all fantastic. I HIGHLY recommend that breakfast burrito. Probably the best in town.
As for the one star reviews; c’mon people.
1 star means: you got food poisoning, you got robbed, and there was blood on the bedsheets.
“The front desk didn’t respond to my every need exactly when I requested” is not 1 Star.

I booked for this summer with what I thought was a hotel called The Outpost. There appears to be a management change. At any rate, booked a room for this summer and our plans changed. It’s been over a month and I’m still waiting for this charge to be completely removed from my credit card. Had to open a dispute with AMEX. After calling this hotel multiple times, I’ve never once spoken to the manager. There’s something off about this property. Look for another option.
