It is important to stay on right trail, as many small pathes in the forest around and we were lost

08/18/2024 Great hike up through the woods. The trail follows the stream for a good 2 miles. There is a small climb that last about quarter of a mile. You will break out into a valley and you start to see the placards of the homesteaders. Continue on the trail and you will come a pond what is left of there hard work.

The sign at the trail head tells you that you will ascend nearly 1800 feet on this journey in 3.5 miles ... If you go all the way to the farthest homestead I would expect it is a few hundred feet more. My memories of this hike will definitely be Lions Paw ascension and the homestead of Sarah Walker. I was fortunate to have a massive fog roll in on me at 1:00 PM in the afternoon upon arriving at the first homestead which is the Sarah Walker. It certainly made the rest of the afternoon extremely interesting. Also I cannot forget to mention the beautiful waterfall you will find on the trail about two Miles from reaching the first homestead. Breathtaking and absolutely amazing. Your efforts should not disappoint you.

A little over half way to Estes Park from Lyons this secluded trail has an easy access point off of US36. The trail mirrors the creek and crossing it numerous times is a lovely feature. Once you reach the upper trail it opens to a bowl where you can visit many different old homesteads. This is a great day hike for all levels and can be expanded into a much bigger event for the adventurous.

Definitely a moderate trail. Beautiful walk on a cloudy day but beware the rocky climbs. Trail goes for 2.8 miles to the meadow where the old homestead were but then you have two separate directions to choose from to hike up to an additional 4 miles each to see the actual remains of the structures.
