With the trail reroute it is 5.8 miles to Granite Falls. The falls are impressive but almost the entire hike is in a burn scar. Limited shade so go when it is cool.

I enjoyed all hikes in Rock Mountain National Park. ***YOU NEED A RESERVATION to enter the park with a private vehicle from 6am-5pm, you can enter without reservation at all other times. It snowed the day I hiked this, the trails were well kept in the snow and after the fires. There are a few meadows & granite falls on this trail, a small waterfall with a great view. Lots of animals!

Amazingly huge meadow a couple of mikes in. Kept going to Granite Falls (a nice cascade). Well maintained, mostly dirt trail. Total round trip mileage with a side trip to the meadow was 12.4 miles in 3.5 hours.

Hiked from the trailhead to Granite Falls. The initial 2 miles to Big Meadows is a bit of a slog; the trail is designed for horse travel, and has a deceptive incline. The trail mellows out from the meadow, then increases in grade to reach the falls. We did not see any wildlife in the meadow, but did see a bull moose in one of the smaller meadows beside the trail. The woodpecker activity in the area is great, and makes the burn area a bit less sad. On a windy day, the burn area could become treacherous, as many trees near the trail have the potential to fall; this could also affect the trail condition in the future. The falls are most likely much more impressive in the summer with snow runoff; they were still beautiful.

Best Trailhead to see wildlife such as moose. Parked the car at the parking lot and a beautiful moose and calf were present at this location. Guess the west part of the park near kawuneeche valley has decent wildlife!
